You may have seen recent news about a partnership between Disney and OpenAI to explore generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in film and television production.
ACTRA Toronto is watching this closely.
Any use of AI that effects performer work raises real questions about consent, compensation and control over our voices, likenesses and performances. While Disney has publicly stated this deal does not include the use of performer voices or likenesses, we know the real impact of AI often shows up in the fine print and in future production practices.
Here is what you should know:
- Human performers remain central to storytelling and must not be treated as interchangeable with AI-generated output.
- Consent must be explicit, informed and revocable.
- Compensation must reflect the value and longevity of performer contributions.
- Transparency is non-negotiable when AI tools are used in production.
ACTRA Toronto is actively monitoring developments, coordinating with our sister unions and advancing strong AI protections in our agreements. We will continue to push for clear rules that keep performers at the centre of the creative process.
Technology may evolve quickly. Performer rights will not be left behind.
