To our colleagues at Casting Workbook, Actors Access, AHAB (Penguin Random House), ECW Press, Author’s Republic, Casting.com, Breakdown Services and ACX,

We are writing today on behalf of ACTRA members to seek clear and transparent information about how performer self-tape auditions and uploaded media are stored, used, and protected within your platforms. Our members rely on your services every day, and they trust that the material they submit is handled responsibly, securely, and with full respect for their rights as creative professionals.

Over the past several weeks, ACTRA has received a growing number of questions about whether self-tape material could be used to develop or train artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Casting Networks has publicly stated that they do not use audition tapes for AI training. Despite this, many performers remain uneasy due to the absence of explicit prohibitions on AI training or reuse within the Terms of Service of several platforms that are central to our casting ecosystem.

We recognize that each of your organizations plays an important role in connecting performers with opportunities. We also recognize that the rapid expansion of generative and machine-learning technologies has created new expectations for transparency and consent. To ensure our members can continue to participate with confidence, we are asking for written clarification on the following points:

  1. What happens to performer self-tapes and uploaded audition materials once they are submitted through your platform.
  2. Whether any performer media is used, shared, licensed, or otherwise processed for the purpose of training or improving artificial intelligence systems.
  3. Whether your current Terms of Service will be updated to explicitly prohibit the use of performer self-tape content for AI training or related machine-learning development.

The intent of this outreach is to provide performers with clarity and reassurance, and to work collaboratively with industry partners as we navigate the evolving digital landscape together. As performers are increasingly required to use third-party platforms to be considered for work, it is essential that they understand how their likeness, voice, image, and performance are protected.

ACTRA is coordinating this inquiry with the ACTRA National AI Taskforce, and we have shared this letter with them in advance. If your organization is willing, we would be pleased to share your response with performers at both the local and national level so they have accurate information directly from the source.

We would be grateful for a response at your earliest convenience. Should there be areas where further discussion is appropriate, we would welcome that conversation and are committed to working toward clear, mutually understood protections for performers.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and for the important role you play in supporting the creative community.

Sincerely,
